Simplicity of Vanilla
This is my take at a vanilla+ style modpack. It improves and builds upon parts of the game I found to be lacking while maintaining the integrity of vanilla.
- Improved world generation in every dimension
- New and improved structures
- All of YUNG's structure mods and Repurposed Structures with a custom config to remove outlier structures which don't fit vanilla
- Improved food and farming
- Combat improvements
- New mobs
- Vanilla mob variants
- Elytra overhaul
- Improved methods of transportation
- More flexible enchanting and anvil mechanics
- Solution to the inventory problem
- Bundles enabled by default and improved
- Crafting recipe improvements
- Expanded trim system to work on weapons and some other items
- New and improved visual effects
- New and improved sound effects
- Compatible with shaders and OptiFine resource packs out of the box
- ... and 100+ other quality of life, user interface, performance and bugfix mods.
Installation
Simply use Modrinth App or Prism Launcher to install the modpack. It is recommended to allocate 6-8 GB of RAM to the game for everything to run smoothly. If this is too much, or if your game is running slow, expand the notes below for suggestions on what to disable.
Notes on Distant Horizons and world generation
Out of the box, the modpack ships Distant Horizons. Distant Horizons pairs excellently with other worldgen mods in this pack and is the intended way to play. However, the mod can be quite demanding, especially on slower computers. Here's what you can do to improve performance:
Change Distant Horizons mod settings
You can try tweaking the mod settings to improve performance. How to open Distant Horizons settings
- Reduce LOD view distance. The modpack sets it to 128 which is the default mod setting.
- Reduce LOD quality. The modpack sets it to Medium which is the default mod setting.
Disable Distant Horizons
If you're not interested in distant LOD generation, you can disable the mod entirely. However, do note that worldgen mods included in this modpack (Tectonic, Nullscape, Amplified Nether) work best at very high render distances, and will not look as intended on lower render distances. Consider disabling those mods as well if you don't like how they look at low render distances, but make sure to do so before starting your world, because disabling them in existing worlds will result in broken terrain.
To play with friends, you have two options:
- Quick join: Use "Open to LAN", then send the IP address that gets printed out in the chat to your friends to connect to. Visit the e4mc mod page for more info.
- Dedicated server: Download the server installer, put it in an empty folder, and run it. This will download all the required server files to the folder and you can then set up the server as usual. This method uses mrpack4server.
Recommended shaders
- Complementary Reimagined with Euphoria Patches: These are shipped with the modpack by default and are highly recommended due to having compatibility for every content mod in the modpack (such as waving crops for Farmer's Delight etc.).
Recommended settings for Complementary
Enable ACL, colored lights are nice:
- Performance Settings -> Advanced Colored Lighting: 4 Chunks or higher
Uncap Nether view distance for Distant Horizons, disable Nether Storm so FPS doesn't tank:
- Atmosphere -> The Nether Dimension -> Nether View Limit: Limitless
- Atmosphere -> The Nether Dimension -> Nether Storm: Off
Raise cloud altitude and enable double clouds, fits Tectonic very well:
- Atmosphere -> Clouds -> Cloud Altitude: 256
- Atmosphere -> Clouds -> Reimagined Cloud Settings -> Double Reimagined Clouds: On
- Atmosphere -> Clouds -> Reimagined Cloud Settings -> Cloud Layer 2 Altitude: 320
- Bliss Shader (direct download link for dev version): Although it does not have mod compatibility for the effects described above, it is one of the best looking shaders you can get right now and has undoubtedly the best visuals when paired with Distant Horizons.
Recommended resource packs
- Vanilla Tweaks: Included in the pack, enabled by default and highly recommended. The packs are carefully selected to fit the modpack well.
- Default Dark Mode: Included in the pack and enabled by default, and is accompanied by my own resource pack that adds dark mode to modded GUIs not covered by the base pack. If you prefer the default GUI color, disable Default Dark Mode and Default Dark Mode SoV Compat in the resource pack menu.
Important FAQ
Coordinates are not listed in F3?
Having a compass anywhere in the inventory will show your coordinates on top of some other info in the top left corner. Clock also gives info about time and weather. Info overlay appearance can be configured in the config for Cherry On Top and you can also bring back info display in F3 by turning off "Reduce debug info in survival" if you don't like it.
There's no minimap or worldmap, how do I navigate and keep track of places?
Press N to bring up a Notes menu where you can write down places and their coordinates so you don't have to take screenshots or keep this info outside of the game itself. In order to add coordinates and other info to the notes, you need to have a compass anywhere in the inventory. For navigating caves, craft Chalk from some calcite and draw arrows on blocks to mark areas you already visited or create a path back where you came from. Friendly reminder that vanilla has a map system and you can put waypoints on maps by placing down a banner and right clicking it with a map.
How do I zoom in?
Have a spyglass in the Belt trinket slot or anywhere in the inventory and press C. If you want to have zoom outright, just install one of the million available zoom mods.
ANOTHER Vanilla+ modpack??? Really???
Yes, I'm aware that there are hundreds, if not thousands of these kinds of modpacks already, and the term "vanilla+" is overused so much at this point that it has lost all meaning. Which is why I'm going to get straight to the point and tell you what makes this modpack different.
Carefully selected mods
Every mod in this pack has been hand-picked to ensure that it fits in the pack and accomplishes exactly what I want it to do, no more, no less. There are no mods which are there just because I felt like adding them. Every mod has a purpose.
Custom-made mods and compatibility patches
Some features I wanted to add don't exist in any mod out there or were poorly implemented, so I made them by myself:
- ReArm is my vanilla-friendly combat overhaul.
- Cherry On Top is a mod heavily inspired by "feature collection" mods such as Quark and Charm which adds most of the features I wanted in this modpack and could not find in other mods.
- Mod Glue is a small mod that patches out incompatibilities between other mods.
While these mods are made mostly with this modpack in mind, they're fully configurable and can be used standalone perfectly fine.
Extensively tested
I've done 2 full playthroughs in this modpack and spent more time bug-hunting than I'd like to admit. There are no breaking bugs or crashes that I know of at this moment. I've done my best to ensure that playing the modpack remains a consistent experience from start to finish.
Update commitment
I'm commited to updating this modpack for newer Minecraft versions as they come out, however, the update pace may be quite slow due to the modpack relying on a few mods which are slow to update. It's also not guaranteed that worlds from previous versions will transfer flawlessly to new ones, but I'll try my best to make it happen and clearly communicate if it's safe to load your old worlds or not.
